Seven Short One Long
(work in progress)

“In civilisations without boats, dreams dry up”
Foucault, Of Other Spaces (1967)

Sebastian Brant’s 1494 satire ‘Ship of Fools’ describes a ship full of fools setting sail, yet never reaching the “fools paradise” of Narragonia.  The concept of this ship aimlessly voyaging through the seas is considered a metaphor for the human condition, where all aboard are representative of humanity, that we are all foolishly seeking pleasure, drifting aimlessly and never reaching harbour.

The work is a result of a seven-month contract onboard a cruise liner exploring the role of ships’ photographer and documenting my experiences. I have photographed myself against an unfamiliar, transient environment and recorded all aspects of cruise ship life that I encountered exploring an emotional as well as physical journey. Ultimately the journey itself has shaped and formed a narrative in the work, as the images respond to and reflect upon my own life.
